Box Babe: Caitlin Picou, CEO

It is not by chance that Kismet Cosmetics became our first brand partner. Owner Caitlin Picou's expertise and leadership is nothing short of impressive. We took a few moments to get to know whats going on in the brains behind this TALENTED beauty.

You live in the New Orleans area, what keeps you there? What makes the city special?

I was born and raised here, and there is just something about the people and culture. I am on, what they call, the Northshore, in a town called Covington. It is just a simple way of life here. For instance, last week we had a beautiful day, so after work, my husband and I walked our daughter and dog down to the brewery in downtown and there was a concert. We saw so many old friends and family, and it was just nice. That is why I love it here.

What is the story of how you started Kismet Cosmetics?

I had been working in the beauty industry developing products since 2009. But I finally decided to take a leap of faith and start my own line in 2013. I got my license as a makeup artist and launched Kismet. I absolutely fell in love with Product Development. I loved coming up with an idea, finding ways to make it happen and then seeing on the shelf in a store. That was what moved me: seeing what people thought of my products and how I could improve. But what really pushed me to finally get started, was the loss of my father. He was a business man and always said I would do something great. So I decided to follow his advice.

How do you overcome day-to-day obstacles in your life and business?

Girl, every single day is totally different. It never goes as planned. I wake up in the morning with a grand list of items and tasks I will be checking off for that day, but between being a new mom and running a business, the unexpected comes up. But I enjoy it all, and I am thankful for my detailed planner. Without that I would be lost!

Say a reader wanted to start their own business, what advice would you give them?

Get some thick skin! Ha! That and don’t be afraid to reach out to other women or men in business. Most are willing to help and give advice. That is how I ended up with Renzoe Box, I helped a fellow woman wanting to know the beauty industry. But that thick skin part is true. I have known many women who gave up because of negativity. Not everyone is going to love what you do, and thats okay.

Name a book everybody should read right now. Why is it so great?

Ok so, being a mom and business owner I don’t ever have time to read books, BUT I am big on podcasts. So I am going to give you my top three must listen to.

  1. Reasonable Doubt

  2. Origins by James Andrew Miller

  3. Boss Girl Creative

Who is the coolest woman you can think of right now? What makes her so cool?

Can I say my daughter? Ha! I mean I don’t know if every new mom experiences this, but I swear I think my daughter, Ruby James, is just the absolute coolest thing in the world. She is just so happy and doesn’t have a worry in the world makes her even cooler, in my opinion.

What's the last purchase you made that simplified your day-to-day life the most?

I have to say Blue Apron has really helped simplify my life since becoming a mom and owning a quickly growing business. I don’t have to decide what to eat, because that seems to be the hardest decision every single day. And I don’t have to find time to go to the grocery. Simple and easy.

What do you believe to be true that almost no one else agrees with you on?

That if you focus on one thing, you can truly be a major success. In today’s world, everyone is looking for a side hustle or quick ways to get famous. I swear everyone is trying to work a day job, some sort of side hustle and then start their own thing. But if they pick just one of these, and put all their energy into it, they would be wildly successful. But I think that is the fear of commitment and lack of faith in what we could actually accomplish. Because if one of these fails, at least you have the others to fall back on.

How can we find out what you're doing these days?

via my Facebook and Instagram (@kismetcosmetics). However, I am trying to master all other forms, like YouTube, Pinterest, SnapChat and Twitter.  So you can also find me there. And of course my website

If you had a Renzoe Box right now, what will we find in yours?

Powder foundation, bronzer, Kismet Blush, my four go-to Kismet eyesahdows all in the top tray. The compartment underneath would have my Kismet Mascarade Mascara, Kismet Streamlined Eyeliner in black and hazel, Concealer, Kismet Lovely Illuminator, and Kismet Lipstick in Vivianna.
